The trail

The Appalachian Trail runs from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine, through fourteen states: the Great Smoky Mountains, the Blue Ridge, Shenandoah, Harpers Ferry, and the White Mountains, where the Appalachian Mountain Club keeps its huts. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy gives about 2,190 miles (3,525 km); the line here, from OpenStreetMap, measures 3,335 km, about 5% less, so treat the figures as an outline and follow the Conservancy's maps for the exact route.
