What was in each version of Global Adventurer

Every version that has been on the App Store, newest first, in the words the App Store shows under What’s New. The current version is 1.2. Features marked Pro are part of Pro.

Version 1.3

In App Review: not on the App Store yet

Plan routes with no signal, and more for paddlers.

  • Plan routes with no signal: tick Also plan routes here without signal when you download an area, and the route planner works on the iPhone itself, places to avoid included, with the same routes our servers draw.
  • Bus and train times in Britain: choose where you board and where you get off, and see the real journeys. Group hikes now show each day of a multi-day route.
  • An elevation profile on every day's card, and while you follow a route: the whole way or the next 5 km, with where you are marked.
  • Paddling: tide times for tidal routes and sea paddles, nautical miles and knots at sea, Siri “start a paddle”, speed on the Lock Screen, and Water Lock on Apple Watch.

Version 1.2

Places to stay along a whole route, and buses and trains in a day's plan.

  • Places to stay along the whole route: the hotels, B&Bs, hostels, huts, bothies and campsites within a few miles of a route, from the More menu, the planner or a route's page. Read them stretch by stretch, or day by day, with a count for each on the map, and see which places are on the route and how far off the others are.
  • Bus, train, tram and ferry: add a ride to a day by choosing where you board and where you get off. Add the times if you have them, and check them in Apple Maps or Google Maps.
  • Zoom into a climb: pinch or double-tap the elevation profile.
  • Bookings: mark each night Not booked, Contacted or Booked, and keep a note about it.

Version 1.1

Peak Identifier, hill goals, multi-day routes, group hikes and paddling.

  • Peak Identifier (Pro): hold up your phone and the summits in view are named, with their height and distance. Peaks hidden behind a nearer ridge are left out, and it works offline in areas you've downloaded.
  • Hill goals (Pro): pick a list to aim at, such as the Wainwrights, the Munros or the Colorado 14ers. Earn badges as you go, see the next hill to bag and the hills still to do on the map, and share your progress as a picture.
  • A new Home: a photograph, your goal, routes near you and your tools, all in one place.
  • Multi-day routes: end each day where you like, or let the app split the route at villages, huts and hostels. Every day gets its own distance, climb, weather, rooms to book, GPX and route card.
  • Places to stay: at every night's stop, and at the finish, the hotels, B&Bs, hostels, huts, bothies and campsites nearby, with phone, website and directions.
  • Plan around times of day: set off later on the first day and finish earlier on the last, and the days are split to suit. Each day shows when it sets off and about when it arrives.
  • View a route, or one day of it, on the map without following it; edit just that day; and mark any activity as a goal to see it on Home.
  • Coordinates: choose Automatic and the map shows the grid for where you are: Ordnance Survey in Britain, the Irish Grid in Ireland, NZTM in New Zealand, latitude and longitude elsewhere.
  • Plan a hike with friends: pick a route, a date and a meeting point, and share one link. Friends see the details, reply and add it to their calendars, no account needed.
  • Share as Image: Instagram-ready cards and transparent stickers of any trail or walk, with one tap to your Story.
  • KakaoTalk: send a route, your live position or a finished hike as a KakaoTalk card.
  • Paddling: canoe, kayak and paddleboard on iPhone and Apple Watch, routes that follow rivers, canals and lakes, launch points and nautical charts.
  • LiDAR relief: 1-metre shaded relief for England, Wales, Norway, Switzerland, France and the United States.
  • Expected back by: set a time on a live share, and the people with your link can see whether you're back.
  • Share from an inReach: add your Garmin MapShare to a live share, and the people with your link can follow you by satellite where your phone has no signal.
  • A far bigger Route Store: day walks, rides and paddling routes around the world, now including Iceland, Ireland, South Korea, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Jordan, Belgium, Argentina and Costa Rica, and the Camino de Santiago's ways in one place. Search now looks inside collections and countries. Day routes are included with Pro; the long-distance trails are free.
  • Getting there: directions to the start in the apps people use locally, such as KakaoMap and Naver Map in Korea and Waze and Moovit in Israel, as well as Apple Maps and Google Maps. Find rooms near every overnight stop, now with Hotels.com too.
  • Plan a Route: choose Walk, Ride or Paddle, fold the planner away to see the map, and zoom to the whole route at any time.
  • Maps: official maps for Iceland and Finland, a 3D map (Pro), Map Layers listed by country, and offline areas that show their age and refresh in a tap.
  • Hebrew and Arabic layouts put right, the watch's bearing arrow included, and many smaller fixes.

Version 1.0

The first release: recording, offline maps, routes and the Apple Watch.

  • Record your hikes: one tap to start, with distance, time and ascent live, on the Lock Screen too. Recording carries on with the screen off and survives a restart, you can drop named waypoints, and the app notices when the walk is over.
  • Apple Watch: record on the watch alone, with heart rate saved to the workout, or use it as a remote for the phone with stats, a bearing arrow to the next waypoint and an offline map. Start, pause and stop with Siri.
  • A map built for walking: our own topographic style with contours, waymarked trails, hillshade, and huts and shelters. Topo, Terrain, Minimal, Satellite with contours and Streets, with a night map after dark; national mapping layers for the US, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Norway and the Netherlands; and winter shading showing slope angle and aspect.
  • Works offline: download the map for any area, or the corridor along a route, before you go. GPS needs no signal, so recording works anywhere.
  • Routes and GPX: import GPX, KML, KMZ and GeoJSON; plan a route by tapping points and the app follows the paths between them; follow a route with distance to the next waypoint, distance remaining, ETA and remaining climb, with off-route alerts; export any hike as GPX.
  • Cycling: record rides as well as walks (road, gravel, mountain bike and e-bike), plan rides on cycle paths, quiet lanes, gravel or trails, and see how much is paved or on signed cycle routes.
  • Stay in touch, stay safe: share your live position with a link, alone or as a group on one map; Emergency Location with your grid reference in large type; where you parked; the forecast from Apple Weather; and daylight warnings.
  • Organise: collections, favourites, photos and notes on every hike, and a home screen with your latest hike and your year so far.
  • iPad and iCloud: a full iPad layout with a sidebar, and optional iCloud backup so your hikes appear on every device you own.
  • Apple Health (optional): save hikes as workouts, with route and elevation.
  • Pro (optional, by the year or once for life). No account, no ads, no tracking.
