The walk

The walk starts from the Whitefriars car park in Settle and makes a circuit of the limestone scars above the town. It climbs Constitution Hill and the track of Banks Lane, then follows a path east below Warrendale Knotts to the cliffs of Attermire Scar. The path turns north under the scar and climbs to Victoria Cave, where bones of hyena and brown bear were found with bronze objects from later times, and goes on to Jubilee Cave. A track and a walled lane lead west down the hill to the village of Langcliffe, and a path across the fields above the road returns to Settle.

It is 7.6 km with 362 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: it is short, but the climb out of Settle is long and steep.

The National Park calls its own walk here strenuous, with a long steep climb to start, and says parts are rocky and can be muddy and slippery. The caves are seen from their entrances: there have been warnings against going into Victoria Cave because of falling rock. Sheep and cattle graze the pastures, so keep dogs on a lead.

Settle has several pay and display car parks; Whitefriars is in the middle of the town and has toilets. Settle station, on the Settle to Carlisle line, is 400 m away.
