The walk
From the Coillte car park in Crone Woods, follow the Wicklow Way south through the forest to Ride Rock, which looks across the Dargle valley to Powerscourt Waterfall. Turn right on the waymarked Maulin Trail, climbing west across the hillside. Where a path heads up to the left, climb to the summit cairn of Maulin, then drop north-west to rejoin the trail at a stile. Forest tracks lead down to the car park. The loop goes clockwise, like the official trail.
It is 7.1 km round with 386 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: forest tracks, some steep, and a rough, boggy summit path. Coillte rates the trail strenuous.
The trail runs through Coillte forest and along the Wicklow Way, a National Waymarked Trail; the summit paths are informal, on open hill above the waymarks. Keep dogs on a lead and watch for mountain bikers. Keep back from the drop at Ride Rock. In mist, stay on the waymarked trail and skip the summit. The waterfall itself is in the private, paid Powerscourt estate and is not visited.
Crone Wood car park is free. From October to March it opens 8am to 5pm (7am to 9pm April to September): be back before the gates close. No bus reaches Crone; Dublin Bus routes 44 and 185 serve Enniskerry, about 6 km away.
