The walk
From the Saloberjet car park at the Hochtannberg pass, between Warth and Schröcken, a path leads west past the little Kalbelesee, a dark pool among the meadows. It then follows the slope above the valley, over pastures bright with flowers in early summer, and drops gently to the Körbersee, a small lake in a green bowl among the mountains. The Berghotel Körbersee stands on its shore. Return the same way.
It is 5 km there and back with 146 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: alp paths and tracks with gentle slopes.
The Körbersee was voted the most beautiful place in Austria in a television poll, so it is busy on fine summer weekends. The meadows around it are a plant reserve: keep to the paths and do not pick the flowers. Cattle graze the alps in summer. The paths can be wet after rain, and snow can lie here from late autumn into May.
The Hochtannberg pass is on the road from Warth to Schröcken, with buses in summer.
