The walk
From the top station of the Ehrwalder Almbahn, the path heads west across the alpine pastures, nearly level, to the Seebenalm, an alp hut beside a waterfall. From there it climbs through larch and dwarf pine into the high basin of the Seebensee. The lake lies under the cliffs of the Vorderer Tajakopf, its water clear and green, and across the valley the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein fill the view. Return the same way.
It is 9.3 km there and back with 269 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: alp tracks and a stony mountain path with one steady climb.
The Coburger Hütte stands about 260 m above the lake, for those who want to go on; that path is steep and needs sure feet. Snow lies in the basin into early summer and can return in October.
The Ehrwalder Almbahn starts just outside Ehrwald, with a large car park and a bus stop. Ehrwald has a station on the line from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Reutte.
