The walk

The toll road from Hinterriß crosses the Großer Ahornboden, a high meadow dotted with old sycamore maples, and ends at the car park in the Eng. From there walk to the Eng Alm, a village of alp huts with a dairy, and take the broad track that climbs south-east through mixed forest. It zigzags up the slope to the Binsalm, an alp with an inn under the limestone walls of the Karwendel. Return the same way.

It is 3.7 km there and back with 283 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a broad forest track with a steady climb.

The maples of the Ahornboden are at their best in autumn, when their leaves turn gold. The area is in the Karwendel nature park. The path on beyond the Binsalm to the Lamsenjochhütte is longer and steeper.

The toll road from Hinterriß to the Eng is normally open from 1 May to the end of October.
