The walk

From the P27 Ebner car park the path goes north past the Ebnerhof and up through the Teufelsklamm: the tourist board describes a rock gate, a bridge and a climb beside the stream, and the Kölblalm is reached in about half an hour. A forest track then leads east to the Huberalm (in the Neuburgalmen pastures), the furthest hut. The way back turns west on tracks and paths to the Ebneralm, drops to the Zeiringeralm (Zosseggalm) and returns by a gravel track and the road to the car park. The last 1.2 km of the track to the Huberalm is walked both ways.

It is 9.5 km round with 417 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: the length and a steady climb, on tracks, paths and some road. The Gesäuse tourist board gives its Johnsbacher Almenrunde as 10.2 km, 3 h 45 min and 485 m, and rates it easy; its highest point, 1,399 m, is the one we reach too.

The tourist board's page for the round says all four alms serve food from June to September; its own pages for the Huberalm (open daily from mid-May to the end of October, closed in case of a bad weather forecast) and the Ebneralm (open from mid-May to October at weekends, in good weather also during the week; call in advance if necessary) give other dates, so look for a hut's own page or call before counting on a meal, and take food and water. The park asks walkers to keep to the marked paths and dogs on a lead; the alms are working pastures with cattle, so close the gates behind you.

P27 Ebner is a charged car park (the tourist board lists it as paid parking; OpenStreetMap shows the national park administration as its operator). The tourist board points to the BusBahnBim app for timetables and to a shared taxi in the Gesäuse, and gives no bus stop for the start.
