The walk

From the Seeklausanger car park at the outflow in the south-west, the line follows the lake promenade north-east through the lakeside houses of Fischerndorf, past Kahlseneck and along the north shore under the Loser to the Seewiese at the east end, a meadow with inns and a boat landing below the Trisselwand and in sight of the Dachstein glaciers. It crosses the inflow beyond the Seewiese and returns along the south shore, through forest and past the Strandcafé, to the car park.

It is 6.9 km round with 34 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: a flat lake path, about two-thirds of it on hiking paths, a fifth on the streets of Fischerndorf and the rest on tracks. The Styria tourism page gives its version as 7.6 km and 2½ hours.

The Altausseer See is a nature reserve. Ausseerland's page for the Seewiese says the promenade between Kaltenbrunn and the Strandcafé is closed in winter because of rockfall and avalanche danger, and that the Seewiese can be reached on foot along it from May to October; it gives no dates for the closure, so ask the tourist office in Altaussee (+43 3622 716 43) before a late-autumn or winter walk.

The Seeklausanger car park has an OpenStreetMap fee tag (fee=yes) and the tourism page asks visitors to note the fee obligation in Altaussee. The Styria tourism page links to the ÖBB and busbahnbim.at timetables.
