The walk

The walk starts from the Triangle car park below the Trundle. It climbs first to the top of the Trundle, St Roche's Hill, an Iron Age hill fort at 206 m with Goodwood racecourse below, then drops east on the Monarch's Way to the road by the grandstands. The road and a path beside it lead to the Chalk Road, a track that runs north down to Charlton. From the village the way climbs towards the woods above North Lane and comes back by a bridleway across the west flank of Levin Down, a Sussex Wildlife Trust reserve of chalk heath and juniper, to Singleton. A path from the church climbs the fields back to the car park.

It is 11.0 km with 276 m of ascent; allow about 3½ hours. The grade is Moderate: there are two steady climbs, onto Levin Down and back up from Singleton.

About a quarter is on roads, the busiest of them by the racecourse, so avoid race days. Levin Down is steep and grazed by cattle: keep dogs on leads near stock. The paths are muddy in places after rain.

The Triangle car park is marked free on the map, though no official page says who runs it or what it charges. There is no station near; the nearest is Chichester, about 7 km away.
