The walk
The walk starts from the car park behind The George in Burpham. It goes up The Street and the lane to Peppering High Barn, then on up the farm track, climbing gently between wide fields to a junction of tracks on The Burgh. There it turns left along a chalky byway, through a small copse, and comes down a lane towards North Stoke with Arundel Park across the valley. Near the bottom a metal gate on the left, easy to miss, leads onto a bridleway that slants down a field and runs back along the foot of the wooded bank above the river meadows to Peppering Farm. Peppering Lane returns to the village.
It is 8.0 km with 120 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy: the climbs are gentle and the tracks clear.
About a third is on quiet lanes. The bridleway under the bank is muddy in winter. The downs here are farmed for grey partridge and other ground-nesting birds, and sheep graze the slopes, so keep dogs under close control. The byway on the top has short, steep ups and downs.
The village hall car park is free; there is very little other parking in Burpham. The nearest station is Arundel, about 2.9 km away. Burpham stands on one of King Alfred's forts against the Danes.
