The walk

The walk starts from the car park by Eshaness lighthouse, at the end of the road on the west side of Northmavine in Shetland. A grassy core path runs north-east along the cliff top, past geos, stacks and caves, to the Holes of Scraada, a collapsed sea cave that a burn runs into. The path carries on north, above the cliffs, to the Grind o da Navir, the headland where storm waves have left huge boulders perched high above the sea. The way back is the same path to the Holes of Scraada, then inland along the shore of the Loch of Houlland, passing the ruined Broch of Houlland on its promontory, before it joins the cliff path again for the last stretch to the car park.

It is 5.0 km round with 158 m of ascent; allow about 1¾ hours. The grade is Easy: grassy paths, never far from the car park, with short climbs in and out of the geos.

The cliffs here are high and there is nothing to stop you stepping off them, so keep well back from the edge and do not climb down to the geos; HM Coastguard has warned against it. The coast is grazed land, with stiles to cross and wet ground by the loch. NatureScot's access guidance asks you to keep your dog close to you while ground-nesting birds are breeding, usually from April to July.

The car park at the lighthouse is listed as free in OpenStreetMap. The lighthouse itself is run by the Northern Lighthouse Board. There is no station in Shetland.

Good to know

  • The cliffs at Eshaness are lava and volcanic ash from eruptions about 400 million years ago, and the coast is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
  • At the Grind o da Navir, NatureScot's predecessor records some of the best examples in Britain of what storm waves can do, with huge boulders perched high above the sea.
  • The Holes of Scraada is a collapsed sea cave that a burn runs into.
  • The Broch of Houlland is the ruin of an Iron Age tower on a promontory in the Loch of Houlland.
