The walk
The walk starts from the car park in Porthgain. It leaves the village to the south and goes west by farm tracks and field paths to the hamlet and beach of Abereiddi. From the beach car park the coast path climbs past the ruins of the quarrymen's cottages to the Blue Lagoon, a slate quarry flooded by the sea. The path then follows the cliff top north-east above the long beach of Traeth Llyfn and on along the cliffs, past old quarries and the line of the tramroad that carried Abereiddi's slate, to Porthgain, where the path drops steeply to the harbour.
It is 6.1 km with 93 m of ascent; allow about 1¾ hours. The grade is Easy.
Take great care on the coast path: stay on the path and away from the cliff edge, above all in wind or wet. The fields hold livestock. Steep metal steps lead down to Traeth Llyfn, but parts of the beach are cut off at high tide and there is a strong undertow, so swimming there can be dangerous. The descent into Porthgain is steep.
Parking in Porthgain is free; the Abereiddi car park charges. Porthgain has a pub, the Sloop Inn, dating from 1743. The Strumble Shuttle bus (404) runs in season.
