The walk
The walk starts at the lay-by car park at the entrance to Pentre Ifan burial chamber, a Neolithic monument. The chamber, dating from around 3500 BC, has a capstone about 5 m long held up by three upright stones. From it a path and lane lead north and then west over the hillside to Pentre Ifan Wood, which has ancient oaks and is being managed to bring back broad-leaved woodland, and the walk returns the same way.
It is 3.9 km with 70 m of ascent; allow about 1 hour. The grade is Easy.
The ground is reasonably level but can be muddy and slippery, above all in the wood. Cadw's page for the monument warns that grazing cattle or other farm animals may be on shared access or neighbouring land, so keep dogs under close control. The National Park notes conifer felling in the wood.
Cadw says entry to the burial chamber is free and parking is a lay-by at the site entrance. The National Park lists no public transport for the walk.
