The walk
The walk starts at Brekkedammen, the weir and bathing place at Frysja in the upper part of Akerselva, and follows the river downstream on its footways and cycleways. It passes Gullhaug bru at Nydalen and goes down through Sagene to Hønse-Lovisas hus and Beierbrua at the Mølla waterfall. From there the line keeps to the river by Nedre Foss and Ankerbrua and ends at Olafiagangen, the pedestrian street at Vaterland. Visit Oslo counts twenty-something waterfalls on the river, which once powered the city's industry, with parks, red-brick factory buildings and street art along the banks.
Oslo kommune's page on its Elvelangs torchlight walk gives the stretch from Brekkedammen to Olafiagangen as eight kilometres; our line is 7.6 km one way with 5 m of ascent and 146 m of descent by the height data, since the river runs down towards the fjord. Allow about 2 hours at an easy pace, longer with stops. The grade is Easy: a gently falling city walk. Almost all of the line is on footways, cycleways and compacted tracks; about 0.2 km are on streets and service roads (OpenStreetMap).
There is no scrambling or exposure. Parts of the line follow cycleways, so keep an eye out for bikes, and Visit Oslo says the path up past the Mølla waterfall is a bit steep, with spray from the fall. Statnett's works at Nydalen have reduced access to the riverside paths in periods, with signposted detours (see the notice). Visit Oslo names a river bath at Nydalen; Oslo kommune calls Brekkedammen a popular bathing place and advises against bathing there for one day after heavy rain.
It is a linear walk, so plan to use public transport at one end. OpenStreetMap maps Kjelsås station 234 m from the start. Visit Oslo says there are places to eat and drink along the river.
