The walk
The walk starts from the Tramway car park in Llandudno, at the foot of the Great Orme Tramway. Streets and footpaths climb past Pen y Dinas, an Iron Age hill fort on the north-east corner of the headland, to the summit of the Great Orme, 207 m, with its views over the bay to Eryri and Conwy. A path leads down to St Tudno's church, a sixth- or seventh-century foundation, and the walk comes back on Marine Drive, the one-way road round the headland, which the North Wales Path and the Wales Coast Path follow, above the limestone cliffs, past the old copper-smelting site at Pen-trwyn to the toll gate on the North Shore.
It is 6.9 km with 309 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy.
The Great Orme is steep and exposed, and the cliffs along Marine Drive are high and the sea below is not fenced everywhere. Marine Drive is a one-way road for cars, so watch for traffic on the bends. About 200 Kashmiri goats live on the headland: leave them alone and keep dogs under close control. Wet limestone paths are slippery. About half the walk is on roads.
The Tramway car park charges. Llandudno station is 1.5 km from the start. There are cafés on the summit and in town.
