The walk

From the car park by the Seeplatz in Lunz am See the walk passes the boat hire and the WasserCluster institute and takes the Professor Franz Ruttner Weg, a gravel path through woods above the south shore, to the east end of the lake near the research station and the Seehof. The way back is on the pavement beside the road along the north shore, with the lake beside you and the car park at the end.

It is 5.2 km round with 40 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: flat, on a gravel path and pavement. The Lower Austria "tut gut!" walking brochure gives this circuit, its Route 1, as 5.3 km, 74 m of climbing and about 1½ hours, calls it an effortless walk, and gives the lake as 70 ha and 35 m deep.

The pavement runs beside a public road, so watch for traffic where it is narrow. The brochure's Route 2 goes on from the lake to the Almgasthaus Rehberg: 9.9 km, 331 m of climbing and about 3 hours, from the same start. The car park is charged (OpenStreetMap parking tag; it is run by the municipality of Lunz am See).

The brochure's way by public transport is the train to Pöchlarn, the Erlauftalbahn to Scheibbs and the MostviertelLinie bus on to Lunz am See.
