The walk

The walk starts from the car park at the end of the road at Arivegaig, near Acharacle. It crosses a bridge and follows a track round the shore of Kentra Bay, with views over the islands in the bay, past a ford to Gorteneorn and round the head of the bay. Beyond a stone house the track heads into a forestry plantation and climbs gently. At a signed junction a track turns right and drops through the trees to the back of Camas an Lìghe, the Singing Sands. The return is the same way.

It is 9.8 km with 135 m of ascent; allow about 2¾ hours. The grade is Easy: level going on a good track.

Dry sand on the beach squeaks when you shuffle across it, because of the round, even grains. At low tide the sands stretch right across the bay. The area was used for military training in the Second World War, and a sign warns that munitions can still be found: do not touch any metal object on the beach.

Parking is free. There is no station nearby.
