The walk
The walk starts from the National Trust for Scotland car park at Glenfinnan, by the visitor centre. A path heads up the glen beside the River Finnan towards the viaduct, climbs to a viewpoint, then passes under the arches and climbs on the far side, with views down onto the viaduct and up Loch Shiel. It crosses the hillside past a knoll looking down the loch and descends through a tunnel under the railway to Glenfinnan station. The route follows the lane to the A830, then a track and path down to the road past the Glenfinnan House Hotel, back to the main road and over the bridge to the monument.
It is 5.5 km with 114 m of ascent; allow about 1¾ hours. The grade is Easy: short, on improved paths, tracks and minor roads.
The viaduct carries the West Highland Line, and the Jacobite steam train crosses it in summer. The monument marks where Prince Charles Edward Stuart raised his standard in 1745. Over a third of the walk is on roads, including a short stretch beside the A830.
The car park charges and is very busy in summer, so arrive early. Glenfinnan station is on the route.
