The walk
The walk starts from the Patterdale Hotel car park. It crosses the valley to Side Farm and climbs the old track to Boredale Hause, then turns north up the steep path to Place Fell, with the length of Ullswater below. The descent heads north-east over the rough top to Low Moss and down beside Scalehow Beck to the lakeshore. The return follows the Ullswater Way south along the shore, over the shoulder of Silver Crag, back to Side Farm and Patterdale.
It is 12.1 km with 805 m of ascent; allow about 5¾ hours. The grade is Hard: a steep climb and rough paths on the top.
The top of Place Fell is often wet, and bracken hides some of the paths in summer. The lakeshore path is rough and rocky in places, with short climbs. In mist, keep to the main path down from the summit.
The Patterdale Hotel car park charges a fee; parking in Patterdale is limited. The 508 bus runs from Penrith station to Patterdale.
