The walk
The walk starts from the New Dungeon Ghyll car park and makes a circuit of the famous skyline of Great Langdale. It climbs by Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn, then takes the walkers' path, not Jack's Rake, to Pavey Ark (702 m). It goes on over Harrison Stickle (735 m) to Pike of Stickle (708 m), whose scree holds a Neolithic stone-axe factory, and returns past Loft Crag and Thorn Crag and down by Pike Howe. It is on path nearly all the way.
It is 8.2 km with 754 m of ascent; allow about 5 hours. The grade is Moderate: the paths are mostly good, but the climb by Stickle Ghyll is steep and the tops are rough and rocky.
The summits are close together but ringed by crags, so in mist take care to find the right paths between them. Carry a map and compass, check the forecast and use your judgement; winter snow and ice make it far more serious. There is a drinking-water point near the start.
The car park charges a fee. The nearest station is Windermere, about 14 km away in a straight line.
