The walk

The walk starts from the Bleach Green car park at the foot of Ennerdale Water. It crosses the weir and follows the south shore east, climbing over the rocky ground beneath Anglers' Crag beside Robin Hood's Chair. Beyond, the path runs along the shore to the head of the lake, crosses fields and the River Liza, and returns along the north shore by forest tracks and the bridleway past Bowness Point and Mireside to the weir.

It is 11.5 km with 62 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: almost level, but rough and slow below Anglers' Crag.

Below Anglers' Crag the path climbs over rocks and needs a little use of the hands; the rest is easy. Cattle graze the fields at the head of the lake and in the woods. Ennerdale Water is a drinking-water reservoir, and the valley above is the Wild Ennerdale project, where the forest and river are being left to grow wilder.

Bleach Green car park is free. The nearest railway station is Corkickle, about 11 km away.
