The walk

Start at the Santa Margarida car park beside the Olot to Santa Pau road. The park's itinerary 1 climbs gradually to the top of the Santa Margarida volcano, where the Romanesque hermitage of Santa Margarida de la Cot stands in the crater, then goes down to the church of Sant Miquel Sacot and follows the GR 2 to the Fageda d'en Jordà, which it crosses on the signed path. It passes the Can Serra information centre beside the underpass beneath the road, goes round the Croscat volcano by the Can Passavent information centre and returns to the car park.

It is 10.4 km round with 290 m of ascent, the park's figure for the climb; allow about 3½ hours. The park gives itinerary 1 as 10.9 km, 3 h 15 and 290 m, graded moderate, with no equipped passages, signed with flags and open all year. The grade is Moderate.

The park says most of its land is private: use only the existing paths and tracks, light no fire, keep dogs on a lead and pick up their droppings, and do not camp, fly drones or take animals, rocks, minerals or plants. The park says that organised groups, meaning any visit led by a company or a person in charge, of any size, must ask the park for authorisation to enter the Croscat volcano natural reserve.

The park's price list says the Santa Margarida car park charges on weekends and holidays and on some other dates, in cash only, 4 euros for a car; the list dates from March 2023, so ask the park. The Rumbus is a public bus run by TEISA between Les Preses, Olot, the Fageda d'en Jordà, the Santa Margarida area and Santa Pau at weekends, on bridge days, on holidays and on other dates; a one-day ticket costs 2 euros, according to ohgarrotxa.com. Its 2026 leaflet, linked from that site, has a calendar of the days it runs: check it before relying on the bus.
