The walk
From Back Wynd car park the walk leaves Falkland by Cross Wynd and climbs a path through the woods of Falkland Hill and over open hill to the domed summit of East Lomond (448 m), where the remains of a hillfort lie on the top. It follows the hill south-west and a track to Craigmead car park, then takes the path down into Maspie Den, a wooded ravine where the path goes behind a waterfall, and follows the Falkland Estate paths back to the village.
It is 7.4 km round with 382 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: the paths are good, though the climb to the summit is steep and sustained.
The summit is open to the wind. In Maspie Den the path passes under an overhanging rock face behind the waterfall and the steps can be slippery. Falkland Estate does not charge for entry, and asks visitors to park with consideration, as the village streets are narrow.
Back Wynd is a Fife Council car park and OpenStreetMap lists it as free; the Falkland Estate says there is more parking in the village at busy times. The nearest station, Ladybank, is about 5.7 km away, with occasional connecting buses from Ladybank to Falkland according to the estate.
