The walk

From the Dambatenne Tea Factory the line climbs through the tea on estate footpaths to Lipton's Seat Road, then follows the estate track to Lipton's Seat, a viewpoint over 1,800 m high (Uva Tourism) named after Sir Thomas Lipton, the Scottish tea magnate, who is said to have surveyed his tea empire from the spot. It comes back down the Dambetenne Road and the paths beside it to the factory. The estate was founded in 1890 and spans 873 hectares (Daily FT, 7 December 2024).

It is 8.9 km round with 370 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Moderate: 42 per cent of the line is path, 22 per cent track and 36 per cent estate and village roads, and the climb is steady. The viewpoint is about 4.4 km from the factory.

Guides advise starting early, because mist and cloud often cover the view from mid-morning (Wikivoyage warns it may be cloudy from 10 am). The paths through the tea are slippery wet and the estate roads carry vehicles; walk facing them. The FCDO warns of venomous snakes and insects in many parts of the country.

Dambatenne is on the road up the valley from Haputale, which has a railway station; Wikivoyage gives 7 to 9 km by road. OpenStreetMap shows a toll booth on Lipton's Seat Road, about 700 m north-east of the viewpoint, and marks the viewpoint as charged; we found no official page giving a charge or opening hours, so ask on the spot.
