The walk
From Ella railway station the way leaves the town by its lanes and Waterfall Road, then runs south for 2.8 km on the paths beside the Badulla railway line, past tea and bamboo, to the Kithalella station area. Uva Tourism's own directions give about 2 1/2 km along the track, with a Bodhi tree before the station near the start of the path up. Here the line leaves the railway for the 'Footpath to Ella Rock', which OpenStreetMap maps as a hiking path, and climbs through trees and tea to the rocky ledge of Ella Rock (1,350 m on OpenStreetMap), 4.8 km from the start. The way up is by the upper footpath and the way down by the 'shortcut' branch, which makes a small loop at the top; from there the way back to the station is the way you came.
It is 9.4 km round with 317 m of ascent; allow 3 to 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: 84 per cent of the line is on path, most of it tagged for hiking, and the last climb is steep.
Much of the first 3 km runs along or beside an active railway line: step well clear when you hear a train, and keep out of tunnels and off bridges when one is due. Four train services a day were reported between Nanu Oya and Badulla from 20 June 2026. The paths on the hill cross and fork, so follow our line on your phone and check it at each junction. Uva Tourism advises taking a guide from Ella town, and its safety tips advise telling someone your plans if you go into remote areas. Sri Lanka Tourism says it often rains in Ella in the afternoon for an hour or so, and that December can be very rainy; the paths are slippery wet. The FCDO warns of venomous snakes and insects in many parts of the country.
Ella Rock, with its eucalyptus plantation, belongs to the Forest Department, and Uva Tourism says the only way up is on foot; we found no official page giving an entry charge. Ella is a few stops before Badulla, at the end of the railway line through the Hill Country (Sri Lanka Tourism), and the walk starts at the station.
