The walk

The walk starts from the Burgenblick car park on the edge of Manderscheid, in the Eifel. It goes north through the upper town to Klosterstraße and on narrow paths above the valley of the Lieser, crosses the river at the north end of the valley path and climbs through forest towards the Wolfshütte shelter and the Belvedere viewpoint, which looks across the valley to both castles. A track and the Rittersteig take it down towards Niedermanderscheid and below the Niederburg, and a steep path climbs past the Oberburg and the Kaisertempelchen shelter back to the town.

It is 5.7 km with 257 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Moderate: the tourist board's page rates the walk 'mittel' and says the paths include demanding climbs, and 0.7 km of our line is path mapped as mountain hiking, in the Lieser valley.

The paths in the valley and on the climbs are narrow and steep, and slippery after rain or under fallen leaves. The ruins stand on rock above the river, so keep to the paths near them. The Niederburg charges admission and its own pages give its opening hours; this line passes below it on the service road and does not go in. The Oberburg is free to visit, says eifel.info (OpenStreetMap tags it fee=no).

GesundLand Vulkaneifel's page of path closures lists nothing at Manderscheid on 11 October 2026; its two dated entries, forestry work from 6 October on the Eifelsteig near the Altburg and on the Lieserpfad from the Gemündener Maar, are both near Daun, not on this walk. The Burgenblick car park is mapped as charged in OpenStreetMap.
