The walk

From the railway station on the Waterside, the walk follows the riverside paths to the Peace Bridge and crosses the River Foyle into the walled city. It goes up to Shipquay Gate, then round the top of the walls past Hangman's Bastion, Butcher Gate, the Royal Bastion and Bishop's Gate to Ferryquay Gate, and back down to Guildhall Square and over the Peace Bridge to Ebrington Square and the station.

It is 4.8 km round with 56 m of ascent; allow about 1¼ hours. The grade is Easy: all on paved paths, wide and flat on the walls, with a few flights of steps up to them. The walls are about 1.5 km round and up to 8 m high; the Department for Communities says they were built between 1613 and 1618.

The Department for Communities says the walls are open to the public and entry is free, but that public access is sometimes restricted because of works, and asks visitors to check before they go. The walls stand above busy streets and have drops on the outer side: keep children close.

The station is on the Belfast to Derry~Londonderry line, and the city has bus services; the walk needs no car.
