The walk

From the National Trust car park beside Botallack Count House the walk goes out to the Crowns, the engine houses of Botallack mine that stand at the foot of the cliffs. It follows the coast path south past the mine chimneys and the West Wheal Owles and Wheal Edward engine houses and drops into the Kenidjack valley, with the ruins of its arsenic works. The path climbs the far side and runs along the cliffs to Cape Cornwall, where an old mine chimney stands on the headland with the sea on both sides. The way back goes inland by field paths to Kenidjack hamlet, then by tracks past Botallack Lane to the Count House. This is the Tin Coast, part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site.

It is 7.2 km round with 224 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Moderate: the National Trust describes the Botallack coast path as rugged, with steep descents, steps and stiles.

This was a mining landscape: there are old shafts and steep unguarded drops beside the paths, so keep to the paths and well back from the cliff edges, and keep children close. Cattle or ponies graze the National Trust's land at times; keep dogs on a lead, and let go of the lead if cattle come close.

The Botallack car park is pay and display and free to National Trust members; there is no overnight parking. Toilets and the Count House Café (not National Trust) are at the Count House. The nearest station is Penzance, about 11 km away; buses run from Penzance to St Just.
