The walk
From the viewpoint above Eigergletscher station, the Eiger Trail runs on a narrow natural path along the foot of the Eiger north face, over steep alpine meadow and scree, and goes on down through pasture to Alpiglen, a station of the Wengernalpbahn. The pages name the restaurants at Eigergletscher and the Berghaus Alpiglen as the places to eat.
It is 6.2 km one way on our line, with 78 m of ascent and 779 m of descent, which are the figures Jungfrau Railways gives; allow about 2½ hours by our walking-time formula. Jungfrau Railways gives 6.1 km, about 2 hours down and 2½ hours in the other direction, graded moderate. The grade is Moderate. Interlaken Tourismus describes the path as natural, 50 cm to 1 m wide, wholly or partly on signposted paths of the mountain hiking trail category, with steep zigzags, a traverse along the Eiger north face, snow grooves and scree fields, and lists sturdy mountain boots, poles, sun and rain protection, food, drink and a phone.
Jungfrau Railways' page shows the trail open from 20 June to 25 October 2026; Interlaken Tourismus says that in exceptional weather, for example snowfall, the Eigertrail is closed, and that a marked variant exists. No 2027 season was found. Jungfrau Railways says the trails are walked at your own responsibility and risk.
The walk needs the Eiger Express gondola from Grindelwald Terminal, or the Wengernalpbahn and the Jungfraubahn, to reach the start, and the Wengernalpbahn from Alpiglen to Grindelwald or Kleine Scheidegg. Jungfrau Railways' operating information shows the Wengernalpbahn between Grindelwald and Kleine Scheidegg, which serves Alpiglen, suspended for revision work from 26 October to 6 November 2026, and the Eiger Express suspended from 9 to 20 November 2026, with shorter hours from 26 October (first trip 08:00, last ascent 15:45, last descent 17:20). Look up the timetable and operating information before you go.
