The walk

The path starts at the end of Løvstakkveien, on the hillside west of Bergen's centre, and climbs steeply from the last houses, by a footway and then a mountain path with a gravel surface, to Skillingsbollen. Above the tree line it runs mostly over bare mountain rock to the top, 477 m, where radio masts stand and the city lies spread below. Return the same way.

It is 4.3 km there and back with 387 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Moderate: the climb is steady and steep, about 390 m in 2.2 km, on a rough mountain path. Visit Bergen gives the way up as 2.2 km and about an hour.

Visit Bergen says the way down is harder to follow because several paths branch off, so keep to the one you came up by. Conditions in the mountains can change fast: check the forecast at yr.no, and bring water and warm clothing, as it is often windy at the top. Visit Bergen, the tourist board, says that in winter the bare rock can be slippery and that, because daylight is short, it does not recommend the hike then.

No car park is marked at the start on the map. Bergen kommune lists three disabled parking spaces at Løvstakkveien 51; Visit Bergen says parking close to the start is limited and suggests Danmarksplass or the indoor SolheimsGarasjen, about 15 minutes away on foot. Bus 10 from Olav Kyrres gate E runs to the stop at Blekenberg in about ten minutes, and the light rail stops at Danmarksplass.
