The trail
The Karnischer Höhenweg (route 403) follows the Carnic Alps along the Austrian and Italian border from Sexten and Sillian by the Sillianer, Obstanser See, Porze, Hochweißstein, Wolayer See and Zollnersee huts to the Nassfeld, and on to Thörl-Maglern. Its length is given as about 155 km in eight to eleven stages; the line here, from OpenStreetMap, measures 152 km. It is a high hut-to-hut route: OpenStreetMap marks about one way in twenty as demanding mountain hiking and one as secured with a rope.
