The walk
The walk starts from the National Park car park in Clapham and makes a circuit. It follows the Ingleborough Estate nature trail through the woods beside the lake to Ingleborough Cave, then turns up the dry limestone gorge of Trow Gill and out onto the moor. The path passes Gaping Gill, where Fell Beck drops about 100 m into a cavern, and climbs steeply to Little Ingleborough and on to the stony summit plateau of Ingleborough (723 m). The return heads east down the path towards Horton, turns south at Sulber and comes down the walled track of Long Lane, then through two tunnels into Clapham.
It is 17.5 km with 611 m of ascent; allow about 6 hours. The grade is Hard: it is long, with a steep, stony climb above Gaping Gill and a rough descent across limestone.
The National Park warns that navigation is harder here than on the other two peaks. Every year people leave the summit plateau in the wrong direction, so in cloud take a compass bearing from the trig point. Keep back from the edge of Gaping Gill.
The National Park car park costs £3.80 for up to two hours, £6 for longer and £7 for 24 hours. The nature trail costs £3 for adults; the walled track beside it is free. Clapham station is 2 km from the village.
