The walk

From the bus stop at the foot of Oriental Terrace, walk east along the Oriental Bay promenade to the Southern Walkway near Carlton Gore Road. Follow its posts up the zigzags and steps through Roseneath, cross Palliser Road at Charles Plimmer Park and climb to the summit lookout, Tangi Te Keo, over the harbour, the city and the airport. Leave by the south-west steps and follow the Lookout Walkway down through the pines to Moeller Street, then steps and the Oriental Terrace path back to the parade.

It is 4 km round with 253 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: short but steep in places, with plenty of steps.

It is steep in places and not suitable for prams. Other tracks on the hill are shared with mountain bikes, so keep left and listen for riders; dogs must be on a lead. The top is exposed to Wellington's wind. A cannon there was fired at noon every day from 1877 to 1900 so the city could set its clocks.

Metlink bus 24 runs along Oriental Parade and stops at Oriental Terrace, and bus 20 climbs to the lookout on weekdays if you would rather ride up. Central Wellington is a 10 to 15 minute walk away; street parking along Oriental Parade is paid.
