The walk
From the base car park on Nancy Greene Way, walk east past the Skyride base station to the signed Grouse Grind trailhead. The Grind soon turns uphill and climbs almost straight up the mountainside on rock and timber steps, past the quarter, half and three-quarter markers. It ends at the timer beside the Peak Chalet; walk on to the Skyride peak station and ride down. The Grind is one way, uphill only: walking down it is not allowed.
It is 2.2 km one way, all uphill, with 781 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Hard: steep steps all the way, with no flat sections. Metro Vancouver gives 2.5 km; the map smooths out the zig-zags, so ours is shorter.
Metro Vancouver closes the Grind for maintenance from 13 October to 6 November 2026. It also closes in heavy rain or high wind, and for the winter once snow and ice make it unsafe. Dogs are not allowed. The top can be ten degrees cooler than the base.
The ride down by Skyride or gondola needs a download ticket ($20 for ages 13 and over, online). Parking at the base costs $10 for three hours or $12 for the day. By public transport, take the SeaBus to Lonsdale Quay and bus 236 to the Grouse Mountain base.
