The walk

From Zermatt station, follow the Z'Muttweg (no. 2) to the hamlet of Zmutt at about 1,940 m, a path Zermatt Tourismus rates Easy (T1). Switzerland Tourism's page for the winter route from Zermatt to Furi says a rural road leads gently on from Zmutt to Furi, at about 1,870 m, and the Furiweg (no. 51) brings you down by Moos and Winkelmatten to Zermatt.

It is 9.0 km round with 339 m of ascent; allow about 3¼ hours. The grade is Moderate on our count, which comes from the time (3.2 hours by DIN 33466). The official figures for the outward leg are 4.3 km, 339 m of ascent and 1 h 35 up; for the way down, 3.7 km and 55 minutes, with 227 m of descent.

The weather in the mountains can change quickly, and Zermatt Tourismus asks walkers not to leave the marked paths and not to go onto glaciers without a mountain guide. Take notice of the warning signs by riverbeds and below dams and water intakes. Farm vehicles may use the road down from Furi, so stay alert.

The walk starts and ends at Zermatt station. Zermatt Tourismus lists June to October as the best season for both paths; outside those months ask the tourist office in Zermatt about snow before you go.
