The walk
The walk starts at the car park by the Gasthof Seehaus at the south end of the lake. It follows the west shore north, first on the Westuferweg and then on a path beside the Almseestraße, to the north end, where it crosses the outflow at the Seeklause and comes back down the east shore on the Ostuferweg, a gravel and pebble path, to the south end and the car park. The lake lies at 589 m on the northern foot of the Totes Gebirge, in the Almsee nature reserve.
It is 6.2 km round with 28 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: gravel and hiking paths, nearly level, with short rises and falls. About 300 m on the west shore, where the path ends, shares the Almseestraße with the traffic to the lake. The tourism page gives the circuit as about 6 km and 1½ hours, and says that spring meltwater can flood parts of the path between two bridges near the car park, that there is loose gravel and there are roots in places, and that the path is not cleared of snow in winter.
The car park by the Seehaus is charged (OpenStreetMap fee tag). The tourism page says the Almtalbahn runs from Wels to Grünau im Almtal, that bus 534 goes on to the Almsee, and that a shuttle from Grünau station must be booked an hour ahead.
