The walk
From the car park in Stans, walk up through the village and fields to the entrance of the Wolfsklamm. Steps, walkways and wooden bridges, 354 steps in all, climb through the narrow gorge beside the waterfalls of the Stanser Bach. Above the gorge a forest path leads on to St. Georgenberg, a pilgrimage church and monastery perched on a rock, reached over a high wooden bridge. The gorge is walked uphill only, so the way back goes down by a forest track and a path east of the gorge to Stans.
It is 6.3 km round with 365 m of ascent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Easy: steps and walkways in the gorge, then forest paths and a track.
The gorge is open from 1 May to 31 October, 9:00 to 16:00, and in fine weather sometimes into mid-November; it is closed in winter. There is an entrance fee. The steps are wet with spray in places. The inn at St. Georgenberg serves food.
Stans is just east of Schwaz in the Inn valley, with a station on the line from Innsbruck.
