The walk

From the car park at the eastern end of the Hintersteiner See, by the Seestüberl inn and the bathing area, follow the lane along the north shore west past the inn at Goingstätt to Pension Maier, at the far end of the lake. The way back follows a path and forest track along the wooded south shore, with views across the water to the grey limestone walls of the Wilder Kaiser.

It is 5.3 km round with 144 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: a tarred lane on the north shore, then paths and tracks with small ups and downs on the south side.

The lake is privately owned; swimming is allowed at the bathing area by the Seestüberl, which charges for entry. The north shore lane is suitable for pushchairs. There are inns at both ends. The south shore path can be muddy after rain.

Hintersteiner See is about 4 km north of Scheffau am Wilden Kaiser. The car park by the Seestüberl is charged; there is a free car park at Scheffau's town hall.
