The walk
From the car park at the lower station of Fjellheisen, the cable car, walk up through the houses to the foot of Sherpatrappa, a stairway of stone steps that climbs the steep slope to Fjellstua, by the cable car's upper station, at about 420 m. From there a clear path heads south over the open mountain to Fløya, 671 m, with a wide view over Tromsøya and Kvaløya. The way back drops west and then north on the path above Reinen, passing close to Steinbøhytta, and returns along the hillside to the start.
It is 7.9 km round with 621 m of ascent; allow about 4½ hours. The grade is Moderate: a steep climb on steps, then easier walking on the top.
Troms Turlag gives the season as May to September. Steinbøhytta, an open hut the turlag has restored, makes a good place to stop for lunch. The cable car saves about 350 m of climbing for anyone who wants a shorter walk.
Bus 26 stops at Fjellheisen, and the car park by the lower station is paid. You can also walk out from the city.
