The walk
From the Florence Falls car park, walk to the lookout over the twin falls, then go down the 160 steps to the plunge pool at their foot. Return to the top by the Shady Creek Walk, which follows the creek through monsoon forest and savanna woodland. Back near the car park, the Florence Creek Walk follows the creek upstream through woodland to Buley Rockhole, a chain of small cascades and rock pools. Return the same way.
It is 4.6 km there and back with 38 m of ascent; allow about an hour. The grade is Easy: easy walking apart from the 160 steps to the plunge pool.
Any body of water in the Top End may hold crocodiles: swim only where the park says it is safe, and obey closure signs. The falls flow all year and are fullest in the wet season and early dry season. It is hot for much of the year, so walk early and carry plenty of water.
Visitors to the Northern Territory need an NT Parks visitor pass. Litchfield National Park is about 120 km by road south-west of Darwin; Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole share an access road.
