The walk
From the Dove Lake shuttle stop, follow the track to Lake Lilla, then climb through forest on the Wombat Pool track. Past the pool it meets the Overland Track below Marions Lookout. Climb the last steep pitch to the lookout, with Dove Lake below and Cradle Mountain beyond, then come back down to the junction. Follow the Overland Track north, down past Crater Lake in its glacial basin and Crater Falls, to the boardwalk across the buttongrass plain and the Ronny Creek shuttle stop.
It is 6.5 km one way with 265 m of ascent and 334 m of descent; allow about 2½ hours. The grade is Moderate: a rough, rocky mountain track with steep steps and, near the top, a pitch where a chain helps on the rock.
The lookout is exposed, and the weather can turn quickly to wind, cloud, rain or snow, even in summer: take warm and waterproof clothes. The steep Chain Track between the lookout and Dove Lake is not part of this walk.
Both ends are shuttle stops. Dove Lake Road is closed to private cars while the shuttle runs (8.15 am to 5.30 pm in October and November); adults pay $15.50 for the shuttle unless they hold a Cradle Mountain icon pass or Overland Track pass. A Tasmanian parks pass is also needed.
