The walk
From The Springs car park, take the Lower Sawmill Track and climb by the Sawmill Track to the Organ Pipes Track. Follow it along the mountainside beneath the Organ Pipes, a wall of dolerite columns above the track, to the junction with the Zig Zag and Pinnacle tracks. Climb the Zig Zag Track, steep and rocky, to the summit plateau and the pinnacle, with views over Hobart and the Derwent. Return down the Zig Zag Track to the junction and take the Pinnacle Track back down to The Springs.
It is 7.8 km round with 561 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: well-used tracks, but the Zig Zag Track is a long climb on rough rock steps.
The summit is often cold, windy and in cloud, and snow and ice are common in winter and spring: dress for winter at any time of year. Pinnacle Road can close in snow and ice, either at the park entrance or above The Springs, but the tracks stay open. Wellington Park is closed to all users on days of Extreme or Catastrophic fire danger.
The Springs is on Pinnacle Road above Hobart, and the kunanyi/Mount Wellington Explorer bus stops there. Dogs are allowed only on approved tracks, on a lead.
