The walk

From the car park at Skájdde (Skaite), the main entrance to Muddus (Muttos) National Park, the path heads north into old pine forest. It keeps close to the river Muddusjåhkå, which has cut a deep canyon (gårsså) through the rock, with views down into it on the way. It ends at Muddusagahtjaldak, the Muddus falls, where the river drops 42 m; nearby are the narrow canyon Gähppogårsså, a cabin, a tent site and a toilet. Return the same way.

It is 13.1 km there and back with 184 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: a good forest path with boardwalks over the bogs and little climbing.

Dogs are not allowed in the national park in summer and autumn; they may come on a lead from 1 January to 30 April. The park gives May to October as the walking season, and the falls are fullest in the spring flood in June. Mobile coverage is poor, so do not count on being able to call. The park is part of the Laponia World Heritage Site.

Skájdde is reached by a narrow gravel road from Ligga power station, off the E45 between Jokkmokk and Gällivare. The road can close in spring when the ground is soft. There is no public transport.
