The walk

The walk starts at the car park by Beuron station, in the Naturpark Obere Donau, and climbs out of the valley to the Rauher Stein, a viewpoint above the Danube near Irndorf. A path along the rim goes on to the Eichfelsen, a lookout over the gorge reached by a short spur to the cliff top and back. It then drops to the Danube near St. Maurus, crosses a footbridge and climbs a path to Burg Wildenstein above the valley, follows a forest track west along the plateau, and drops steeply by paths to the Petershöhle and the Danube. A last stretch through the valley and over the Danube brings you back to the station.

It is 12.3 km with 421 m of ascent; allow about 4 hours. The grade is Moderate: the climbs are steep, 623 m of the line is on paths mapped as mountain hiking, and some of the lookouts have cliff edges. The Donaubergland tourist board's own trail past the same viewpoints is 14 to 15 km with about 550 m of ascent.

Surefootedness and fitness are needed, and the paths are steep and slippery when wet. A massive rockfall near the Maurushöhle closed the old line of the tourist board's trail, which was moved up to Burg Wildenstein (its page, updated 14 January 2025); this walk keeps well away from that path. The board gives its premium trails an official winter pause from mid to late November until April or May; it asks walkers not to walk them in winter because the climbs and descents are often slippery or icy, and takes down the orientation boards at the car parks.

The station car park is mapped as free in OpenStreetMap (25 spaces); the Klosterparkplatz by the abbey is mapped as charged. Beuron has a railway halt, which the tourist board names as a start, so the walk can be done without a car.
