The walk

From the car park by the castle the walk goes along Pevensey High Street and takes the bridleway of the 1066 Country Walk north, across the A259, to the bank of the Pevensey Haven. It follows the bank north-west for about 3 km across the grazing marsh to Rickney, and comes back by Rickney Lane and field paths to Chilley Farm. A footpath from the farm crosses the Haven by a large footbridge and runs straight over the Levels to the A259 again, then goes through a farmyard to Peelings Lane and Westham, and so back to the castle, a Norman keep inside the walls of a Roman fort.

It is 7.8 km and flat, with 10 m of ascent; allow about 2 hours. The grade is Easy: level all the way, on river bank, field paths and a lane.

The A259 is crossed twice and is fast: take great care. Cattle graze the marsh, which is cut by deep ditches, so keep dogs on leads. The ground is wet in winter. Much of the marsh away from the paths is nature reserve with no public access.

The castle car park is pay and display; its tariff was not confirmed, and older sources say it charges in summer only. There is free parking on the street in Westham. Pevensey Bay station is about 600 m away.
