The walk
From the Walking Trailhead, forest paths and tracks climb south-east along the hillside and leave the trees for the open ridge, rising to the summit of Mullaghcarn at 542 m. The council's Mullaghcarn Trail is marked with purple decals, and on the top stands Darach, one of the three Giant sculptures of the Sperrins. The way back is the same line.
It is 7.2 km out and back with 355 m of ascent; allow about 2¾ hours. The grade is Moderate: forest roads and tracks throughout, with open hill at the top. The summit is exposed and often in cloud: take a map and compass and extra layers.
The forest is worked and its trails may be diverted or closed from time to time; Fermanagh and Omagh District Council runs the park and sets its charges, so check the notices at the entrance.
