The walk
The walk makes a circuit from the Mill Road car park in Arundel, a town with a castle, a cathedral and a railway station. It goes up through the Duke of Norfolk's deer park past Swanbourne Lake, crosses the higher ground of the park, reaching 117 m, and drops to the tiny village of South Stoke. The return follows the banks of the tidal Arun back to Arundel, and the last stretch along Mill Road is the way you came. It is mostly on path, with a little road and track.
It is 9.5 km with 169 m of ascent; allow about 2¾ hours. The grade is Easy: the climbing is gentle and the paths are clear.
Arundel Park is closed to walkers on 24 March each year. In the park, keep dogs close near the deer, and close the gates behind you.
The Mill Road car park charges a fee. Arundel station is about 800 m away in a straight line, so the walk is easy to reach by train. There are no mapped water sources on the route.
