Great Soča Gorge and Soča Village

From the car park by the gorge, cross the suspension footbridge and follow the path downstream along the rim of the Great Soča Gorge, Velika korita Soče. Below you the emerald river is squeezed between walls of white limestone only a few metres apart, carving potholes and deep pools as it goes. At the lower end of the gorge turn back and follow the Soča Trail upstream beside the river, past the car park, to the village of Soča and its church of St Joseph, then return to the start.

It is 4.6 km with 65 m of ascent; allow about 1½ hours. The grade is Easy: riverside paths and a short stretch of lane, with roots and rocks underfoot in places.

The rims of the gorge are unfenced in many places and the rock is slippery when wet, so keep children close and stay back from the edge. The river is very cold and fast even in summer. The Soča Trail continues both ways if you want a longer day: upstream to Trenta, downstream to Kršovec and Bovec.

The car park by the suspension bridge is on the road between Bovec and Soča village. In 2026 the free summer bus up the valley ran until 30 September.
