The walk
From Sredno Vodno, above the southern edge of Skopje, take the path that climbs south-west through oak and beech woods, crossing under the line of the cable car, to the top of Vodno at Krstovar, 1,066 m. The Millennium Cross, 66 m tall, stands on the summit, with views over the whole of Skopje and the Vardar valley. Return the same way.
It is 4.9 km there and back with 449 m of ascent; allow about 3 hours. The grade is Easy: a steady, steep path, rocky and slippery when wet.
The cross was built in 2002 to mark two thousand years of Christianity in Macedonia, and it stands on a platform of twelve columns, one for each apostle. There are cafés at Sredno Vodno and by the cross. The path is a favourite with people from the city, so it is busy at weekends.
Sredno Vodno is reached by road from the southern edge of Skopje, and there is a bus stop by the lower cable-car station.
